Questions and Answers with TeamMates Coordinator Stan Turner

May 8, 2019

How long have you been the TeamMates Coordinator and why were you interested in leading this program at Bennington?

Approximately 4 1/2 years. Our TeamMates chapter was founded in the fall of 2014 and we formed our first match in January of 2015.  As an educator it was my belief that some students would benefit from additional adult interaction. When this opportunity came to me I wanted to help provide this extra support for students.

Why do you believe the TeamMates Mentoring Program is important?

Because of the TeamMates student-centered approach and the support it provides to any student who wishes participate in the program.

What do you enjoy the most about the job?

Seeing mentees and mentors enjoy their experiences together.

Why would you encourage someone to become a TeamMates mentor?

The gift of time is the most awesome thing you can give someone. Just 30 to 45 minutes a week can make a big difference for both mentees and mentors.

How do you match up mentors/mentees?

Both the mentees and mentors take an interest survey that helps us find things they have in common.  All mentors are interviewed  before they are matched so we can make the best match possible.

When people donate monetarily to TeamMates, what are some examples the funds are used for?

These funds are used to support match activities and to help support mentors’ learning opportunities.  Our chapter also wants to provide a scholarship for each of our mentees when they graduate from high school. As our chapter grows, it will be important for our TeamMates to have a sustainable scholarship fund.

Where would you like to see TeamMates Mentoring of Bennington five years from now?

Hopefully in five years we will have doubled the number of matches as well as the impact this program has on helping our mentees reach their full potential in life.
