Community Connection with English Language Families

English Language Learning students and families attend Bennington High School football game.

Ann Bouaphakeo, Bennington Public Schools' K-12 English Language (EL) teacher, has launched an exciting program to connect ELL students and their families with the broader school community. Through a Classroom Grant, her initiative, "Community Connection with English Language Families," offers families unique opportunities to experience school events they may not have attended before, fostering greater inclusion.

This initiative aligns perfectly with the BPS Foundation’s refreshed mission to impact ALL students across the district, ensuring that no student or family is left out of the educational and extracurricular opportunities the district offers. The BPS Foundation is committed to supporting initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and this program is a shining example of that dedication in action.

Bouaphakeo’s first event, a Bennington Badgers football game in Fall 2024, welcomed 13 EL students along with their family members to their first-ever Badger football experience. Thanks to the grant, each family received free admission, concession vouchers, and Badger gear to wear, ensuring they felt fully part of the school spirit. “The first night was a success,” Bouaphakeo said. “It was so rewarding to see families come together, engage with the game, and share in the Bennington school experience.”

With the support of this year-long grant, the program will continue to cover activities like basketball games, musicals, and other school events throughout the year, creating even more opportunities for ELL families to engage with the school community. With over 70 ELL students district-wide, many more are expected to participate.

By continuing to welcome more ELL families into the school community, the program not only fosters a sense of inclusion but also highlights the diverse families that make up the Bennington district. This initiative is making a lasting impact by ensuring all students and their families feel welcome, celebrated, and fully integrated into the rich culture of Bennington Public Schools, truly embodying the BPS Foundation’s mission to serve ALL students.
