Anchor Pointe Elementary’s 1st-grade phonics instruction received a significant boost through the BPS Foundation’s Classroom Grant program, designed to help classrooms go beyond the norm to enrich educational experiences and foster deeper student engagement.
Thanks to the grant awarded end of last school year, Barb Knott, a dedicated 1st Grade Teacher at Anchor Pointe, was able to incorporate interactive phonics resources into her classroom.
“These tools have transformed her phonics lessons, making them more engaging and effective,” said Knott. “We use mirrors for students to see how they form sounds, magnetic letters for word chaining, and magnetic chips with wands for blending and segmenting.”
The grant provided the reusable mirrors, magnetic letters, and magnetic chips with wands, which have impacted not only the current cohort of 20 students but will also benefit future classes.
“I am incredibly thankful for the Foundation’s support,” Knott said. “The grant allowed us to enhance our phonics instruction significantly, engaging students in a way that traditional methods could not. Now that we have these resources, they’ll continue to support our teaching for years to come, benefiting many more students in the future.”
