Bennington Organizations Adopt 17 Families
Many organizations from Bennington stepped up during the holiday season to adopt 17 local families in need at Christmas. The groups shopped for, bought and delivered gifts from each of the families’ wish lists.
Growing from 15 adoptions in 2017, the school district identifies families each year who may benefit from the extra help during the holidays.
“As the district grows, so does the number of families in need,” said Regina Meradith, executive director of the Bennington Public Schools Foundation. “Our community has developed a rich tradition of adopting families during the Christmas season with student support as the main goal.”
This year’s list of donors included Three Timbers Church, Ignition Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bennington Jaycees, Runza, the Bennington Boys Varsity Basketball Team, as well as a few Bennington families.
The Bennington Public Schools Foundation contacts each identified family to see if they are interested, and then each organization receives a specific family who agreed. The families make lists of suggested gifts and items needed and the groups coordinate the rest.
“We are fortunate for how many people in Bennington are willing to volunteer their time and money to support fellow community members, Meradith said. “We look forward to continuing this program for years to come.”
